Your step count becomes distance through one thing: your stride length. Pick the average that fits you โ or measure your own โ and get miles, kilometres and feet.
Measure your own stride: walk 10 natural steps, measure the distance in feet, divide by 10.
The maths is miles = steps ร stride (ft) รท 5,280. Stride is where all the difference hides: at a 2.2 ft stride, 10,000 steps make 4.17 miles; at 2.5 ft they make 4.73 miles. That is why the famous "10,000 steps = 5 miles" line is only roughly true โ it assumes a long 2.64 ft stride.
| Steps | Miles (2.2 ft stride) | Miles (2.5 ft stride) | Km (2.5 ft stride) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1,000 steps | 0.42 mi | 0.47 mi | 0.76 km |
| 2,000 steps | 0.83 mi | 0.95 mi | 1.52 km |
| 5,000 steps | 2.08 mi | 2.37 mi | 3.81 km |
| 7,500 steps | 3.12 mi | 3.55 mi | 5.71 km |
| 10,000 steps | 4.17 mi | 4.73 mi | 7.62 km |
| 12,500 steps | 5.21 mi | 5.92 mi | 9.52 km |
| 15,000 steps | 6.25 mi | 7.10 mi | 11.43 km |
| 20,000 steps | 8.33 mi | 9.47 mi | 15.24 km |
About 2,100 steps at an average man's stride (2.5 ft) and about 2,400 at an average woman's stride (2.2 ft). Taller people with longer strides need fewer.
Close, but usually a bit less: 4.2-4.7 miles for most adults. It reaches 5 miles only with a stride of about 2.64 ft, which is longer than average.
Very rough โ about 0.04-0.05 kcal per step for an average adult walking at a normal pace. Body weight and speed change it a lot, so treat it as a ballpark, not a measurement.
Watches estimate stride from your height and movement sensors. Two devices can disagree by 5-10% on the same walk; the stride you actually have beats any default.
