How Many Square Feet Is a Basketball Court?
If you’re planning to build a basketball court, comparing gym sizes, estimating flooring requirements, or…

Every property listing uses the same phrase: “set on a one-acre lot.” It sounds generous β a little piece of countryside. But stand in an empty field and try to mark out exactly one acre, and you will probably claim twice too much land, or half of what you should. An acre is a unit everyone quotes and almost nobody can picture. Let’s fix that, with football fields, tennis courts and one short walk.
Quick Answer: One acre is 43,560 square feet β also 4,840 square yards, 4,046.9 square meters or 0.4047 hectares. If it were a perfect square, each side would run about 208.7 feet.
The acre started as a practical idea β roughly the land one man with one ox could plough in a day β but its modern definition is exact: 43,560 square feet. Everything else follows by multiplication. Here is the ladder:
| Acres | Square Feet | Square Meters | Hectares |
|---|---|---|---|
| ΒΌ acre | 10,890 sq ft | 1,011.7 mΒ² | 0.1012 ha |
| Β½ acre | 21,780 sq ft | 2,023.4 mΒ² | 0.2023 ha |
| 1 acre | 43,560 sq ft | 4,046.9 mΒ² | 0.4047 ha |
| 2 acres | 87,120 sq ft | 8,093.7 mΒ² | 0.8094 ha |
| 5 acres | 217,800 sq ft | 20,234.3 mΒ² | 2.0234 ha |
| 10 acres | 435,600 sq ft | 40,468.6 mΒ² | 4.0469 ha |
The fraction people ask about most is the half β our guide to one-half acre is how many square feet works through it in full, and how long is 10 acres stretches the same numbers over proper countryside.
An American football field. Count both end zones and the field covers 57,600 square feet. An acre is about 76% of that β picture the whole field, then give back roughly a quarter of it.
A standard soccer pitch. At 105 Γ 68 meters, a pitch covers about 1.76 acres (its length is just over ten lengths of the bus-sized 10 meters from our other guide). Turned around, one acre is about 57% of a pitch β a touch more than half the grass.
Tennis courts. Count only the playing lines of a doubles court β 78 Γ 36 feet, which is 2,808 sq ft β and about 15.5 courts of playing surface fit inside one acre. Courts only β not the fences and run-back space a real club builds around them.
Parked cars. A parking space plus its share of the driving aisles works out at roughly 300 sq ft per car, so an acre parks about 145 cars β a supermarket car park of respectable size.
A plot with 100 feet of street frontage. If a piece of land is 100 ft wide, it has to run 435.6 ft deep to hold a full acre β deeper than a football field is long.
Bars show the shares faster than numbers do. First, an acre against a football field, end zones included:
Against a soccer pitch, the same acre shrinks to a 57% share:
Nothing says an acre is square. Any shape whose length times width gives 43,560 sq ft is one acre β which is why two plots advertised identically can look completely different:
| Shape | Dimensions (ft) | Dimensions (m) |
|---|---|---|
| Square | 208.7 Γ 208.7 ft | 63.6 Γ 63.6 m |
| Wide rectangle | 100 Γ 435.6 ft | 30.5 Γ 132.8 m |
| Near-square | 200 Γ 217.8 ft | 61.0 Γ 66.4 m |
| Long strip | 50 Γ 871.2 ft | 15.2 Γ 265.5 m |
Checking a plot of your own is the same multiplication β or let our square feet calculator do it, after seeing the method on a room-sized example in how many square feet is 10 by 20.
Fence a square acre and the fence line runs about 835 feet β just under 0.16 miles, or roughly a three-minute lap at an easy pace. Walk the boundary four times and you have covered about 1 kilometer. It is a satisfying size: big enough to feel like real land, small enough to know on foot.
Most homes never sit on a whole acre. The standard suburban lot is a quarter acre β 10,890 sq ft β which fits a house, a driveway and a garden you can genuinely use. Step up to a half acre (21,780 sq ft) and there is room left over: a pool, a big shed, a vegetable patch, or just distance from the neighbours.
One warning from the small print: listings round shamelessly β “about half an acre” can be 0.42 of one. Before you fall in love with a plot, take the square feet from the deed and divide by 43,560.
Treating an acre as a length. “How long is an acre?” has no answer until you choose a width. A square acre has sides of 208.7 ft, but an acre shaped as a strip one foot wide would run 43,560 feet β eight and a quarter miles of land one stride wide. Area first, shape second.
Mixing up acres and hectares. A hectare is 10,000 square meters β about 2.47 acres, well over double. Swap the two in a listing or a farm contract and you have misjudged the land by a factor of two and a half. A metric listing of 0.4 hectares is one acre in metric clothes.
Always 43,560. The acre is a fixed unit, so the number never changes β it is also 4,840 square yards or 4,046.9 square meters.
With both end zones, a football field is 57,600 sq ft, which is 1.32 acres. Count only the playing field between the goal lines (48,000 sq ft) and it is 1.10 acres.
Yes β it is the classic suburban lot size. At 10,890 sq ft there is room for a family house, a driveway, and a front and back garden, which is why so many neighbourhoods were built at this density.
Under a minute. One side is 208.7 ft β about 45β50 seconds at a normal pace; corner to corner (roughly 295 ft) takes about a minute.
About 2.47. A hectare is 10,000 mΒ² and an acre is 4,046.9 mΒ², so one hectare of land is roughly two and a half acres.
